From an entry in the Weymouth records it seems that John Whitman's wife's name was Ruth and that she died 8 17 1662.

In the Weymouth records is found this entry : "died 18.17, 1662, Ruth, wife of John Whitman;" there is evidently an error as to date, which should probably read: " d. 8.17, 1662;" some think this was the wife of John, while others think it refers to Ruth Reed, wife of John". The date of the birth of the eldest child of John, viz: Ruth, b. Feb. 1, 1663, would, however, indicate that it must be the wife of John. The loss of the early church records on which the name of the wife of John would appear destroys any opportunity of clearing the mystery regarding- her name.

He had four sons and five daughters, all but one of whom survived him, and six of whom lived to be over eighty.

Origin

Ruth is believed to be the daughter of William Reed and Avis (Chapman) Reed.<ref name="Farnam">Farnam, Charles H., History of the Descendants of John Whitman of Weymouth, Mass. (Pages 9, 16) New Haven: Tuttle, Morehouse & Taylor, 1889, OpenLibrary.org accessed February 10, 2015</ref> She was born in 1642 at Weymouth, Massachusetts.

Note: Avis, wife of William Reed, was at one time thought to have been Avis Deacon, but subsequent research revealed that Avis Deacon immigrated to Virginia, and the Reads who were aboard the Assurance were expressly "to be transported to Virginea"! !<ref name="Kinney">Kinney, Greg, "Probably Avis Chapman - not Avis Deacon" GenForum July 22, 2000, accessed February 8, 2015</ref>

Family

Ruth married October 19, 1662 at Weymouth to John Whitman.<ref name="WVR">Vital Records of Weymouth, Massachusetts, to the year 1850... (Page 159) Boston: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 1910, OpenLibrary.org accessed February 11, 2015</ref> Another transcription of the Massachusetts Vital Records to 1850, Weymouth, Volume 2, Marriages, reports that John Whitman and Ruth Reed were married on December 19, 1662 at Weymouth.<ref name="MVR">Massachusetts Vital Records to 1850. (Weymouth V2, Page 218) (Online Database accessed February 26, 2015: AmericanAncestors.org, New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2001-2010).</ref> They had no children together.

Ruth died only months after her marriage in 1662. The record of Ruth's death at Weymouth actually reads, "died 18. 17, 1662, Ruth, wife of John Whitman." There is obviously an error, and it is thought that the date is meant to read, 8, 17, 1662.<ref name="Farnam"/>

She married John and died within months. She died without issue.<ref name="Farnam"/>
