About Rutherford Trowbridge

Their son, Rutherford Trowbridge, was born February 3, 1744, in New Haven, and here spent his entire life. He early learned the mason's trade and after the Revolutionary War began he petitioned the government to allow him to manufacture saltpetre and received the first bounty for that commodity. He was an earnest patriot and fought with the volunteers of New Haven in repulsing the British. He was married July 9, 1760, to Dorcas Hitchcock, a daughter of Captain Amos and Dorcas (Foote) Hitchcock. She was born in Woodbridge, Connecticut, November 10, 1746, and died February 12, 1788. The death of Rutherford occured April 6, 1825.

Rutherford Trowbridge, son of Daniel Trowbridge and Mabel "Mehitable" Brown, was born 1743 in Fairfield Twp, Fairfield Co.,Conn. He married 1st, in New Haven, on July 9, 1767, with DORCAS HITCHCOCK, dau of Amos Hitchcock and Dorcas Foote. She was born Nov. 10, 1746. They resided at the SE corner of Water and Columbus Streets. He amassed a large estate. She died Feb. 12, 1788 of small pox. He was a mason and bricklayer.

Children by Dorcas: Henry (1781) and Dorcas (1786).

After Dorcas' death he married 2nd, on Jan. 1, 1793, in New Haven, with THANKFUL ALLING, widow of Nathaniel Mix, who died 1781, aged 32. He died Apr. 6, 1825 and is buried at Grove Street Cemetery, New Haven, New Haven Co., Connecticut. Thankful died Apg. 8, 1831 and is buried there also.
