Sachin Soni (1994 - 2014)

Brief overview:

Sachin (20), a student in his final year of mechanical engineering at the Durban University of Technology, was shot twice in the stomach on Monday 3rd February 2014. Ash Soni (68), Sachin's father and Sachin were inside their Greenwood Park home when two men stormed into the lounge at around 20h00 demanding money.

Sachin was upstairs in his bedroom at the time, but ran downstairs to help his father, who was trying to ward the attackers off with a broom. When Sachin shouted at the men, they shot him twice. A neighbour drove Sachin to hospital, where he passed away a few hours later.

Soni said that all the gates were locked but he believes that the perpetrators gained entry into the home via and open garage door.

The two attackers fled without taking anything.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said a case of murder and attempted house robbery was opened at Greenwood Park SAPS for investigation.

  • Greenwood Park Community Policing Forum (CPF) chairperson Robin Candy said this was not the first incident of house robbery in the area, and the community was “devastated by the death of a young person in this fashion”. “We have a high number of armed robberies, house robberies and hijackings in the Red Hill, Glen Anil and Effingham areas. In the last financial year, we had 104 reported house robberies in these areas. Firearms were used in all these crimes. Effingham is the most targeted,” said Candy.
