He was born the love child of Mona Bell and Samuel Hill, the famous railroad heir; builder of the Peace Arch at Blaine, Columbia Gorge Highway, and the Maryhill Museum. Like his mother, he loved horses. He married Virginia "Ginnie" Hill (DOB abt 1929) on 19?? in ? Together they had one child, Paula.

Although not a member, he often attended the board meetings for the Maryhill Museum.

Sam died after a prolonged illness, he was 69 years old.

Sam B. Hill was the son of philanthropist and businessman Sam Hill and the flamboyant reporter Mona Bell, a former bareback rider who may have appeared in Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show. Some time before they had a child together, Sam bought Mona 35 acres (140,000 m2) on the Columbia River and built her a 22-room house (eventually lost to the construction of the Bonneville Dam). Sam arranged a marriage of convenience for Mona Bell to his cousin Edgar Hill, allowing his child to be raised as legitimate.
