About Sam Hollander
GRO Birth Reference: 1902 M Quarter in SHOREDITCH Volume 01C Page 16
HOLLENDER, SAMUEL Mother's maiden name: WALTER
Samuel and Pessy (Polly) born in Southwark, London. Family travelled to NZ on the Turakina in 1910 following Morris Hollander.
Keen sportsman. Worked in family business but then began managing hotels. Family lived in Timaru and Akaroa as well as Christchurch while managing hotels. Also a rugby test referee, and refereed three of the four matches of the Lions tour to NZ in 1930. Not required to go to WWII because he had children.
In 1936, Sam and Ray went to Timaru to set up a shop because Ray wanted to. When down there Rae was not happy and wanted to come back to Christchurch so they sold up and came back. They then went to Akaroa where they ran the Bruce Hotel.
A year after Mama died Polly asked Paula to leave because she did not help. At this time they already had Esther, Mark, Eber, Papa and Polly living in the house. Polly found it got too much and so Esther and Mark also had to go.
Before Papa died he told Sam that the best thing he could do was to divorce Rae because their marriage was not very successful.
Sam had never got around to changing his Will although he had planned to for quite a while. It was very hard for Daisy to support herself and the two boys for about three years until everything was settled up between her and Ray.
