Sam Houston Nixon was born on January 1, 1868 in Guadalupe County, Texas, USA. His parents were Captain Robert Thomas Nixon, (CSA) and Laura Ann Nixon.
Sam married Annie Elizabeth Nixon Ballard on June 24, 1891 in Segiun, Guadalupe County, Texas, USA. Together they had the following children:
He died on February 20, 1951, in Houston, Harris, Texas, USA, and was buried in Houston, Harris County, Texas, USA.
He chose to be a rancher like his father. He was given the choice to go to college like his older brothers to become a doctor or some other lucrative profession, but he loved the land and being out in nature working alongside his father, so he took the offer of land and a homestead. In the first part of his married life, he was a successful rancher alongside his father. He grazed well-bred Durham Beef cattle, a herd of Jerseys, horses, and mules. He, as well as his father Robert Thomas Nixon, was experimenting with crossbreeding of Spanish Ponies and Bay, Spanish Ponies, and Quarter Horse Stallions. He was the owner of a Billy-stock stallion and he continued to have good horses. The Nixon's horses were used for a saddle horse, but just south of their Ranch lived Tom King, who regularly went with his horses to tracts all over the county. "pg 12 "Early Nixon's of Texas"
After his father's death, he didn't do as well. He finally sold what was left of his ranch and moved to California before 1920. He didn't seem to fare well in California, he worked as a laborer in a cotton mill until retirement, by 1930 his wife separated then divorced him. The Great Depression years were difficult for many people. By 1940 he moved back to Texas with his son, Thomas Edison Nixon who was an Electrical Engineer and lived with him until his death.
