Sam Wyche, the longtime and much revered Cincinnati Bengals head coach who led the franchise to its most recent Super Bowl appearance, has died at the age of 74.
His son, Zak Wyche, told Cincinnati TV station WCPO that the NFL mainstay had been battling cancer.
“It was in his liver and he just went really fast,” said the coach’s son. “He was able to walk around Saturday with a walker and then the next morning he was unresponsive.”
In his eight seasons manning the Bengals sideline, Wyche racked up 61 regular-season victories — second-most in team history — and two postseason appearances.
After leading the Bengals to an AFC-best 12-4 record in 1988, he propelled them to postseason victories over Seattle and Buffalo before falling to the San Francisco 49ers, 20-16, in a Super Bowl XXIII thriller.
