Unpublished Journal of Newton Tuttle, letter of Newton Tuttle to his sister, tell of places along the trail. Aaron Farr Diary, MS1800, entry for either 31 Mar 1854 or April 3, 1854--the two copies of Farr differ on date as to when they left Vermont. The group of about 53 arrived at Fort Leavenworth on May 2, 1854.They apparently left about June 19, 1854, the Bucklands and Russells along with the Tuttles and others started west with 44 wagons, 250 herd of cattle and about 200 people.

According to Newton Tuttle, their group arrived in Great Salt Lake on September 19, 1854. Samantha Jane Buckland, who became the wife of Charles, was born on September 12, 1825, in Royalton, Windsor, Vermont. Her death is 1893 not 1895. See "James Daggett Buckland to William Buckland, letter May 29, 1894. Also handwritten records believed to be those of Kamas Branch/Ward or Charles Lyman Russell have the 1893 date. Book Echoes of Yesterday says that Samantha died shortly after delivering a grandchild. This grandchild was Edith May Woodard, who was born in December of 1892. Tombstone in Kamas, Utah has the wrong death date as does Samantha's Endowment House card. The primary source, James Buckland's letter written in 1894 settles the date as 1893, not 1895. This was restated by the wife of James, Nancy Laura Buckland in a letter written August 10, 1904 to William's Widow, Olive H. Bucklin: "Samantha born September 12, 1825, died March 30, 1893, Wooland (meaning Woodland, Utah)
