About Samual H Hagan

Settled in Farmington Township, which was then in Veanango County and now in Clarion County, Pennsylvania. He is buried at the Shotts Cemetery just north of Leeper, PA although his stone has no date there. [Note that probably Samuel's daughters Angelina and Catherine Ann are buried there too but if they are their graves are unmarked.]

Federal Census 1840 for Pennsylvania: Venango County, Farmington Twsp Pg. 5 of 10 Line 29 Samuel HIGGINS has 1M under 5, 2M 20-30, 2F under 5, and 1F 20-30. A near neighbor (Line 25) is Wm. HEASLEY with 2M under 5, 1M 5-10, 1M 30-40, 1M 70-80, 1F under 5, and 1F 30-40.

Federal Census 1850 for Pennsylvania: Clarion County, Farmington Twsp Pg. 197 Line 26 344/348 Samuel HAGENS age 38 is a farmer with $20,000 [sic considering his age and the real estate value of his near neighbors this probably should be $2000] in real estate. His wife Elizabeth is age 36. Both of them and all their children as follows were born in Pennsylvania: John H. age 14, Angelina age 12, Betsy Jan age 10, Sarah A. age 7, Melinda G. age 5, Robert W. age 3, Jacob age 7 months. Also living with them was Smith Dobbs (line 35) age 22 born in Pennsylvania a school teacher.

Immediate neighbors to Samuel & Elizabeth HAGENS were Levi MYERS (Line 24 343/347 age 22 & his wife Betsy J. age 19 both born in Pennsylvania. Levi had $300 in real estate. A close neighbor was Conrad MYERS (Pg. 196 Line 38 338/342) age 56 & his wife Susanna age 43. He had $1000 in real estate. Both of them and all their children as follows were born in Pennsylvania: William age 19 a farmer, T or F nly A. age 16, Barbara A. age 14, Adam (Pg. 197 Line 1) age 11, Susanna age 9, Conrad L. age 7, and Margaret E. age 2. [Perhaps Conrad is Levi's father by an earlier first marriage or his uncle. Daughter Susanna would grow up and marry John Henry HAGAN, Samuel & Elizabeth's son, in 1860.] Near neighbors in the other direction of Samuel & Elizabeth HAGENS were Robert HILLER age 52 a farmer with $1560 in real estate and Sarah SHOTTS age 42, both born in Pennsylvania. Perhaps Robert is Sarah's brother. In either case the children following, all born in Pennsylvania, are her's because they bear the surname SHOTTS: Hezekiah age 22 a farmer, Henry (line 42) age 14, Lucinda J. (Pg. 198 Line 1) age 12, Caroline age 7, and Robert age 4. [Sarah's son Henry later married Samuel & Elizabeth HAGEN's daughter Elizabeth "Betsy" J..]

Further away are (Pg. 198 Line 21 368/372 Jesse G. BUTLER age 49 born in Vermont & his wife Eliza age 46 born in New Jersey. Jesse is a carpenter with $700 in real estate. Their children, all born in Pennsylvania, are: Willliam age 26 a farmer with $500 in real estate, Mary J. age 21, Matilda age 19, Elizabeth age 16, Priscilla age 14, George W. age 9, and James C. age 6. There doesn't yet seem to be a connection with Samuel & Elizabeth HAGENS but further away is Alphonso BUTLER (Pg. 200 Line 25 397/401) age 44 born in Vermont a farmer with $1500 in real estate and his wife Sripta (?) age 41 born in New Jersey. Their children, all born in Pennsylvania, are: Harvey age 18 a farmer, Albert age 14, Ambrose (line 29) age 11, Benjamin age 9, William H. age 5, and Margaret age 2. [Alphonso's son Ambrose later married Samuel & Elizabeth HAGENS' daughter Sarah A. Therefore Jesse & Eliza BUTLER, buried in the Hagan/Shotts Cemetery, are probably Ambrose's uncle & aunt but definitely not his parents. Since Jesse and Alphonso, probable brothers, were both born in Vermont, there is no possibility for a further connection with the HAGAN family since the BUTLER ancestry would be most likely New England Yankee but not Pennsylvania Deutsch.

Samuel Hagan was a farmer and a logger. One day while drafting logs down the Allegheny River he fell in. Because of this he caught a cold and it developed into fatal pneumonia. It took his estate 16 years to settle. Finally in 1867 the farm, worth $2,576.45, was divided. Samuel's widow Elizabeth received $858.82 and his 6 surviving children received each $286.27. Soon after the estate was settled the family went their seperate ways: John Henry to Nebraska, Elizabeth Jane and Sarah Ann remained in Pennsylvania, Belinda went first to Iowa and later to Idaho and Mama (Elizabeth), Robert William and Jacob Newton went to Mercer Co, Missouri. Altough Elizabeth Hagan left Clarion Co, Penn after Samuel's death she never did remarry and survived him by 45 years.
