About Samuel Adkins

Second husband of Esther (Welch) Fenn, widow of Joseph Fenn of Milford, CT. Susan Abbott states in Early Families of Milford that Samuel Adkins was the son of Josiah Adkins.

Probably born in Middletown, CT. Married Esther Fenn in Milford in 1693. Birth date not certain. I have seen 1651 and 1660. His mother probably died in 1669, so he was born earlier than 1669.

May be the son of Josiah Adkins and his first wife Elizabeth Andrews. Torrey lists a first marriage of Josiah Adkins (died 1690) of Middletown, CT to Elizabeth Andrews, daughter of Edward, born (sic, should be died) possibly in 1669. And Torrey says that Josiah Adkins "calls Nathaniel Stowe brother".

"In Families of Early Milford there is a Samuel Adkins, son of Josiah, who married in 1693 to Esther, daughter of Thomas and Hannah (Buckingham) Welch and widow of Joseph Fenn. They had 2 children, Mary and Samuel, and Esther died in 1715. The daughter Mary was married at Milford on 12 Apr 1716 to William Gold, apparently as his second wife, and had a son, Samuel, there in Feb 1716/7.
The Wethersfield History quotes from Orcutt's History of New Milford regarding a Samuel Adkins, "from Milford, but earlier from Weth., the s . of Josiah Adkins of that place, settled in New Milford about 1717.... sold out and removed from town about 1755 with no children recorded to him there." Stiles adds that the family is of Middletown origin and refers to Savage."

"While most of these records would seem likely to pertain to this Samuel, the 1755 removal might pertain to the son, Samuel Jr, as a man w ell into his 80's doesn't seem likely to be seeking a new home. Mentioned in his father's will as having already received his portion. A manuscript chart in the CT Historical Society indicates that this Samuel had his inventory taken 6 Nov 1697, and links him to the Esther Welch Fenn mentioned above. It lists children Mary who married William Gold and Samuel who sold out at New Milford in 1755."
