About Samuel Bennett, I

Disputed Parents

Samuel Bennet was disconnected from Edward Bennett of Rehoboth They are not related according to the latest research by Robert Charles Anderson in the Great Migration. There is no evidence Edward of Rehoboth ever married or had children. Edward was born c 1615 died after 4 Jun 1646. Savage conflated him with the man of the same name of *Providence.* They are not identical. James Elston erroneously stated that Edward was father to Priscilla. Neither is true. His origins and parents are unknown according to Robert Charles Anderson in the Great Migration Series.

Anderson, Robert Charles; George F. Sanborn; and Melinde Lutz Sanborn. The Great Migration: Immigrants to New England, 1634-1635. (NEHGS, 1999-2011), 1:253-54. link Origin unknown. Not the same man as Edward Bennett of Providence, Rhode Island. He was not the father to Priscilla Bennett

Samuel Bennett, born 1628, died 1684, in Greenwich, Rhode Island, where he bought lands, 1652; was made freeman, 1655, sergeant of militia at a salary of £20, 1656; was voted 100 acres of public land in consideration of his military services during the war with the Narragansetts and also with King Philip; was deputy to the general court, 1678. Note he was not son of Edward Bennett. Austin's “Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island”, page 18 shows that he was a Cooper and that he lived at Providence and at East Greenwich, R.I. It also lists the offices he held from 1652 to 1678. Holmes “Directory of Ancestral Heads of New England”, gives similar information. Ray R. Knight (Knight Family) Page 8 Samuel Bennett, b. 1628, d. SAMUEL BENNETT , a cooper; a resident of Greenwich, RI 1684 will proven; wife Anna, Executrix, Anna (last name not known) married as a widow Moses Forsman. An interesting point is that Samuel's and her son Samuel married a daughter of this Moses Forman, his step sister. In Essex, Mass., 1644, Hugh Lynn and Samuel Bennett were presented to the court for being, "Common sleepers in church" and fined each two shillings and sixpence. Samuel evidently became wide awake, for in 1664, July 15th, he buys "ye new water mill." His circumstances had improved for nine years previously Joshua Foote sued him for debt, but as Foote's dog had killed Bennett's calf, for which Bennett received the sum of twenty shillings, possibly revengeful litigation was not altogether unknown at that early date. A certain Rev. George S. Bennett from Boston made exhaustive search of old records in which the author has used.

Samuel was a cooper. Made a freeman in 1655, he was a General Sergeant & a commissioner. His will was proved October 23,1684. source: Gen. Dictionary of RI, p 18

Samuel married Anna UNKNOWN. After his death, Anna married as her 2nd to Moses Forman, (who had deserted his wife, Hannah Crooker, and removed to Rhode Island).
