About Samuel Adkins Bertram
OBITUARY of Bertram, Samuel Adkins
-- Prof. Sam A. Bertram, Aged 74, Died Sunday Following Stroke, Funeral on Wednesday -- Prof. Samuel Adkins Bertram died here at his home in Oneida last Sunday morning at 3:30, following a stroke of paralysis suffered only thirty minutes prior to his passing. Mr. Bertram was a prominent citizen here and in Morgan county where he lived for a number of years. He had served for a teach in the public schools and high schools of Morgan and Scott counties for more than forty years, teaching here in the Oneida high school last year and resigning on account of ill health. He served a term as Mayor of Oneida, was a member of the Masonic lodge, had been teacher of the Men's Bible class here at the First Baptist church for the past eleven years, and was always active in the civic, fraternal, and religious life of the town and county. He attended East Tennessee Teacher's College, Johnson City, Tenn., and University of Tennessee, Knoxville. In the passing of Prof. Bertram, the town and county loses one of its splendid citizens. The large crowd attending the funeral and the unusually large number of floral offerings were evidence of the high esteem in which he was held in the town and community. A brief funeral service was held here at the First Baptist church Wednesday morning at 10:30, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Fred Rudder and assisted by G. M. Prosser, minister Church of Christ and Rev. F. M. Goss, pastor of the First Methodist church. The body was then taken to Sunbright Baptist church for a short service there where Prof. Bertram had lived and where he taught for many years. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Electa Bertram; one son, B. J. Bertram of Sunbright; two daughters, Mrs. C. W. Pemberton of Rockwood and Mrs. T. V. Davis of Fork Mountain; three brothers, Winfrey, Porter and Alvin, two sisters, Mrs. Ethel Cooper and Mrs. Belle Marsh, all of Sunny Brook, Ky.; 13 grandchildren, six of whom are in the service; two great grand children and a large number of relatives and friends. Interment was in the Sunbright cemetery Wednesday afternoon with Schubert's of Wartburg in charge of arrangements. Active pall bearers were: Morley Phillips, Lory Smith, Howard Coffey, O. K. Shannon, Herbert McDonald and Bradley Pennycuff. Honorary pall bearers were: Walter Fowler, C. W. Wright, Bill Phillips, John Lee West, Jas. B. Carson, Jr., Dexter Laxton, A. M. Lay, O. E.
