About Samuel Bowles, Il

Bowles, Samuel, 1797–1851, American newspaper editor, b. Hartford, Conn. He founded (1824) the Springfield (Mass.) Republican, a weekly. In 1844 it became a daily under the influence of his son, Samuel Bowles, 1826–78, b. Springfield, Mass., who had joined the Republican at 17.

From Fresno Republican News Archive About The Newspaper: FRESNO DESK - The Republican newspaper first appeared in the year 1824 in Springfield, Massachussetts. Its founder and publisher was Samuel Bowles(1797-1851).

Alexis de Tocqueville actually met Samuel Bowles when the young Frenchman visited the offices of the Springfield Republican in 1832 on his American tour. After the meeting with Bowles, Tocqueville wrote in his diary 'I am of the opinion ..that what best explains the enormous circulation of the daily press ...is that among the Americans I find the utmost national freedom combined with local freedom of every kind.'

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Republican_(Springfield,_Massachus...

Established by Samuel Bowles II in 1824 as a rural weekly, it was converted into a daily in 1844. From the beginning it had a focus on local news. As rapidly as possible its news-gathering was extended until within a few years its columns contained departments of items from every town and hamlet along the Connecticut Valley, as well as from Springfield. It achieved national renown in the 19th century under the tenure of Samuel Bowles III, a legacy that was passed to his son, Samuel Bowles IV.

In 1855, Bowles lII called for the founding of a new party that would abolish slavery. He suggested the name "Republican". Once abolitionists founded a party by this name, The Republican became one if its most unrelenting supporters.
