About Samuel Arthur Cole
ACCIDENT NO. 16-March 9, 1911 -Samuel A. Cole, No. 15, C. & H. Mine.
Samuel A. Cole, an American miner, came to his death on this day at the 6th level No. 15 shaft, C. & H. He died in the hospital about five minutes after his being taken there, from a fracture of the skull.
At the inquest held over his body by Coroner Fisher the following witnesses were examined:
Pat Mulligan: "I work at the 6th level South, No. 15 shaft C. & H. I knew the deceased. I was working with him at the time of the accident. He was taking the machine off, he got his arm under the machine and then lost his balance and fell pulling the machine along with him. The handle of the machine was resting on the ground when he took hold of it to swing it back. Don't know what caused him to fall, the machine was on the arm and the arm was firm and rigid."
Verdict: "That the said Samuel A. Cole came to his death on the 9th day of March, 1911, while in the act of shifting a drilling machine, by losing his balance and being violently knocked to the ground causing a fracture of the skull, at the 6th level, No. 15 shaft, Calumet and Hecla Mine."
