About Samuel Francis Smith

Samuel Francis Smith died at the age of 80 years and 2 months and 3 days from a cerebro-vascular accident, arterio schlerosis and senility, according to his death certificate. He was born November 21, 1873, in Parowan, Utah and died January 24, 1954, in the Holbrook Municipal Hospital in Holbrook, Arizona. He had lived in the area of Snowflake, Arizona, for 75 years at the time of his death. He was the son of Jesse Nathaniel Smith, (who was a nephew of Joseph Smith, Sr. and a first cousin to Joseph Smith, Jr.) and Emma Seraphine West Smith. Jesse had been born in New York and Emma in Tennessee. The West family was descended from royalty in England. Samuel was probably named after his maternal grandfather, Samuel Walker West. Samuel's occupation was listed as a farmer and merchant in the mercantile business. Samuel married Lulu Hatch and they had 13 children. He was buried January 26, 1954, in the R V Mike Ramsay Memorial Cemetery

Final rites were held at Snowflake on Wednesday afternoon for Samuel F. Smith, 80, for 33 years president of the Snowflake Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Mr. Smith died at his home in Snowflake early Sunday after several years of failing health.

A native of Utah, he came to Arizona at the age of 5 with his father, Jesse N. Smith, who preceded him as president of Snowflake Stake. For many years Samuel was manager of the Snowflake branch of the Arizona Cooperative Mercantile Institution. He was stake president from 1906 until 1939, and was known and loved by members of his church in Flagstaff, Winslow, Joseph City, Holbrook, Woodruff, Snowflake, Taylor, Pinedale, Lakeside, Show Low, Clay Springs, Heber and McNary, where there were churches over which he presided.

He leaves his wife, 11 of 13 children, 16 brothers and sisters, 26 grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. Sons are Dr. Francis L. Smith, of Davis, California; Col. Carl N. Smith, Camp Carson, Colorado; Harold H. Smith, Heber, Utah; J. Lorenzo; Smith, Salt Lake City; and Robert J. Smith, Provo, Utah. His daughters are Mrs. Kenneth S. Boyle and Miss Edna Smith of Phoenix, Maurine Smith of Snowflake, Mrs. J. D. Hansen of Joseph City, Mrs. Jess N. Dewey of Los Angeles, California, and Mrs. LeGrand Mathis of Ogden, Utah.

Samuel F. Smith, Longtime Church Leader, dies at 80 -- Snowflake (AP) -- Samuel F. Smith, 80, who served as president of the Snowflake Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for 33 years, died today in Holbrook Municipal Hospital. Smith had been in failing health for several months. He had served as stake president here from 1906 to 1939, a record of service believed to be unequaled in the West.

Smith was born in Parowan, Utah, the son of Jesse N. and Emma West Smith. He came to Arizona with his parents at the age of five and had lived here most of his life. Smith was employed by the Arizona Co-operative Mercantile Institute in Holbrook and later managed the institute's branch here for many years. He also engaged in farming.

He was married on April 5, 1900, in the Salt Lake city Temple to Lulu Jane Hatch of Snowflake. In addition to his widow, Smith is survived by 11 of his 13 children, 16 brothers and sisters, 26 grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

The sons are Dr. Francis L. of Davis, California; Col. Carl N. of Camp Carson, Colorado; Harold H. of Heber, Utah; J. Lorenzo, Salt Lake City; and Robert J., Provo, Utah.

The daughters are Mrs. J. D. Hansen, Joseph city; Mrs. Jess N. Dewey, Los Angeles; Mrs. LeGrand Mathis, Ogden, Utah; Mrs. Kenneth S. Boyle and Miss Edna Smith, both of Phoenix; and Maurine Smith of Snowflake.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Snowflake Ward Chapel with the ward bishopric in charge. The body will lie in state at the family home here from 6 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, and from 11 a.m., to 1:30 p.m., Wednesday.
