________________________________________________________________________ Biography:
At the end of the 1860s, Samuel Frank's parents and grandmother moved from Allendorf near Sundern to Weidenau. They founded a manufactured goods business before the Haardt. Samuel was the eldest of 10 children. According to Wilhelm Fries, a roommate in the Frank household, the family enjoyed a high reputation in Weidenau. The shop at Untere Friedrichstrasse 8/1 (today Weidenauer Strasse 160) developed into the largest textile shop in the community. Samuel Frank and two of his brothers took part in World War I. Brother Max died of an injury.
Daughter Ruth was born on December 28, 1912 and son Manfred on January 23, 1916. After returning from the war, Samuel and his wife took over the business. Daughter Inge was born on January 23, 1922. Samuel Frank's parents died in 1927 and 1928 respectively. Both of them are buried in the Hermelsbach Cemetery in Siegen.
During the first five years of the National Socialist regime, Samuel Frank and his wife were able to continue running the business, which temporarily employed 26 people, relatively unhindered. Four of his five siblings who were still alive assessed the political situation more realistically than their brother and emigrated in good time. Daughter Ruth emigrated to the USA with her husband Herbert Frankenstein from Solingen in July 1938. They later took the name Frank.
In the course of the pogrom night, Samuel and Manfred Frank were arrested and interned in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp for two weeks. In December 1938 the business passed to Otto-Rosskamp & Co. Manfred Frank managed to escape in May 1939. Samuel, Paula and Inge Frank were deported along with other South Westphalian Jews on April 28, 1942 via Dortmund to Zamosc in present-day Poland. Ruth Frank committed suicide in 1969, Manfred Frank died of a heart attack in 1961.
