About Samuel Gates
SAMUEL2 GATES (George1), born November 8, 1681 in Haddam, CT, married ESTHER HUNGERFORD. She was baptized in East Haddam, October 12, 1712. They resided in East Haddam on the homestead of his father who deeded it to him November 30, 1721. He was called “Sergeant Samuel Gates.” He died in East Haddam, July 31, 1737, in his 56th year. Mrs. Esther Gates died in East Haddam, May 15, 1749 in her 62nd year. They were buried in the Cove Burial Ground. Sergeant Samuel Gates died intestate and a probate document, dated December 7, 1737, names his heirs and specifies the portion of the estate each was to receive. The house, barn, orchards, and “homelott” were assigned to Samuel, the oldest son, and the remaining land was divided among the four sons. The widow Esther Gates received one-third of his personal estate, after all debts were paid, and the rest was equally divided among his four daughters.
