About Samuel T. Girvan

Samuel did not have a university education but was well read, particularly in the field of navigation, history and religious studies. He was interested in ships and boatbuilding. He went to Saint John, N.B. as a young man (about age 17) to study navigation. He built the schooner "Maple Leaf". This schooner weighed 21 tons. It was built at the mouth of the Richibucto River in 1902. In 1882 Samuel went to Duluth, Minnesota for work. His family joined him in 1883. They left Duluth in January, 1884 and arrived in Spokane Falls, Washington in February, 1884. He worked for the raoilroad and he and his family lived in a log cabin on Lake Eloika. Samuel and his family returned to New Brunswick in 1892 when he bought a farm near Coal Branch.
