It would seem that Sam was a farm worker in the Saxtead/ Framlingham area of Suffolk most of his life, until migrating to Australia in 1883 at the age of 41 with his second wife Ellen and seven of the children from his first marriage.
He was described in the "Bundaberg and District Pioneers" as a labourer in 1890, and the Electoral Roll of 1900 says that he owned land in Goodwin Street, Bundaberg, from 1894. The Queensland Post Office Directory shows him as being a farmer up at Maroondan, near Gin Gin, in the years 1897/99 at least.
He died in Bundaberg at the age of 62, and is buried in the Bundaberg General Cemetery.
