Samuel Graham

The year of birth is estimated as 1789 from details in the death registration in 1882 showing age at death being 93. [2]

The location of birth may be Lisnagrot, Kilrea, Londonderry, Ireland being originally sourced from Ancestry.com tree Graham Family Tree Owned by sm014f6537. An inquiry was made regarding source of the location and the response was that there was:-

   no real evidence for the birth of Samuel Graham at Lisnagrot other than circumstantial, although it seems very likely that he was born in the parish of Tamlaght O’Crilly. His date of birth is from his age at death (92 years on 16 February 1882) as recorded on his grave stone at the 1st Kilrea where the place Lisnagrot is recorded after his name. [3]

A greater understanding about the family and where they lived can be gleaned from the words of the Graham Family Tree owner, sm014f6537.

   ...by 1826 when James was born Samuel is said to be of Moneysalley, as he is said to be at the 1831 census of Tamlaght O’Crilly, the tithe appointment book of 1833 and Griffiths Valuation . Griffiths Valuation also has a Samuel Graham renting land and buildings in Lisnagrot. However It looks as though he was subletting the house and office at Moneysalley so perhaps the family were in fact living in Lisnagrot. As I expect you know Moneysallin (as it is now called) is an adjacent townland to Lisnagrot so it represents only a few miles difference. 

   I know from the Will of Smith Graham that John Graham, my ancestor, was the son of Samuel, even though he was born before the records begin at Kilrea. He was Samuel and Elizabeth’s first born son and one thing that has always puzzled me is that Samuel gave him the name of John, which by tradition would have been the name of Samuel’s father. The fact that Samuel is often referred to as Samuel Graham Jnr seems to contradict this unless he was called this because his grandfather was still alive.[3]

Samuel Graham was buried in the Kilrea First Presbyterian Church Grave yard in 1882. [5] Inscription:-

   127. GRAHAM 

   In memory of SAMUEL GRAHAM Lisnagrot 

   who died 16th February 1882 aged 92 years 

   Erected by his son SMITH GRAHAM
