FATALITY AT THE WOLVERINE.

Samuel Hebbard, a Miner, Killed by a Fall of Rock.

Samuel Hebbard, a Miner, employed at the Wolverine, was killed by a fall of rock Thursday while at work on the 22nd level of No. 4 shaft. Death came within a few minutes after the fact of the accident had been discovered. Hebbard was an old employ of the Wolverine company. He was about 55 years of age, and leaves a wife and four children. His funeral will take place in calumet tomorrow. Mine Inspector Dawe and Coroner Fisher investigated the accident. The latter conducted an inquest yesterday afternoon. Which brought out a verdict of accidental death.

ACCIDENT NO. 38. — Wolverine Mine, September 6th, 1906, Sam Hebbart, English.

Testimony on the inquest held before Coroner Fisher, on the body of Sam Hebbart, a miner, who came to his death on this date, being killed by a fall of vein rock.

James Rowe, upon his oath, says: “I am a miner for the Wolverine Mining Company. I knew the deceased. He is also a miner. I was working with him today back of the 22nd level, No. 4 shaft, north side. I was with him at the time of the accident. It happened between nine and ten o'clock this morning. We were barring loose ground and I went to borrow a pick. After we got through and got the piece of ground down, I returned it again. Just as I came back from returning it, Hebbart was standing with a bar in his hand. He told me it was looking pretty good where we were barring. On that, I went to stand where he was, and I felt a little loose rock fall down. I moved off from where I was and he moved after me. We hadn't moved three or four feet when a piece of rock came down right on him. We went there on purpose to bar the ground down. The piece came from the back of the stope. We had not barred there where the rock came from because it looked good there. We were barring where we thought it was bad. We thought it was alright to stand there. The rock that came down was vein rock.”

Verdict of the Jury: “We, the Jury, upon our oaths do say, that the said Sam Hebbart came to his death on the 6th day of September 1906, at the 22nd level, north side No. 4 shaft, Wolverine Mine, by a fall of vein rock, and from the testimony given it was purely accidental.”
