Redacted from 52 ANCESTORS in 52 WEEKS, #29 : Samuel HUTCHINS, 1682-1742 by Celia Lewis. TUESDAY, JULY 15, 2014

Samuel HUTCHINS ... was the 5th son of the 8 children of Enoch HUTCHINS & Mary STEVENSON, who married 5 Apr 1667 in Dover, N.H., about 20 miles up the Pascatagua River. All children were listed in Enoch's will, written Jun 7, 1693; deceased May 9, 1698, killed by Indians. Samuel, aged 16 years, received 5 shillings, as did many of the children.  The oldest two sons received a division of the real estate, one plot can be seen on a map of Lower Kittery, 1635-1700. Other family surnames which intermarried with the Hutchins/Hutchings family may be found here as well: Fernald, Pettigrew (Pettygrove), Ball, Hammons. Note that HUTCHINS is sometimes spelled Hutchings.

Unfortunately, after his father Enoch was killed, Samuel, his younger brother Jonathan, and his mother Mary, were captured by the same Indians on May 9, 1698 and taken to Canada. [Old Kittery and Her Families, 1903, by Everett S. Stackpole]. I can't imagine how distraught his siblings and other family members must have been at this time. They were returned by the new year, apparently. ....

In 1720, Samuel was made a Field Officer in Kittery, as protection for Indian raids; his house was made into a garrison for this purpose.   About 5 years later, he sold his house in Kittery and moved to Salisbury, 30 miles south of Kittery. Later he and Hannah moved to Arundel - before 30 June 1729 [Genealogical Dictionary of Maine & New Hampshire]. Arundel is about 20 miles north of Kittery.

Samuel and Hannah had the following 11 children - the first 5 children were baptized all together on 26 Apr 1719.

  1. Sarah was first born, say 1711. No further record after baptism.
  2. Caleb was listed next, born say 1713. Married Sarah Fryar.
  3. Samuel (Jr.) was born third, say 1715; bap 26 Apr 1719. Married Sarah Barter [SIC: widow Baxter]. No surviving children.
  4. Hannah, born say 1717, bap 26 Apr 1719. Married. (1) Lemuel Perkins, (2) John Burbank
  5. Simeon, born say 1719, bap 26 Apr 1719. Married Agnes Durrell.
  6. Mary was born say 1720 (after 1719) and died 16 Mar 1793. Married John Merrill.
  7. Lydia, was born abt 1721 (after 1719). Married (1) John Jellison, (2) John Durrell
  8. Joseph, born say 1722. He died BET 2 JUL 1788 AND 8 JAN 1793 . Married Elizabeth Bryar.
  9. Levi was born about 1725 and died before 21 Mar 1794. on 22 Oct 1748  m. (1) Rebecca Hutchins;  (2) Eunice March
  10.  David was born about 1729 and died BET 1807 AND 1809 . Married Lydia Gilpatrick.

Samuel's will was written 20 October 1742, and he likely died shortly afterwards.

His will was probated 28 Dec 1742; inventory appraised at £722: 6: 9.

  •  - Wife Hannah received house and estate to reside;
  •  - Sons Simeon and Levi were given the real estate holdings to share, plus a gun each.
  •  - Levi also received his Mare and an equal share with his mother
  • - David received a gun plus 5 shillings.
  •  - His daughters received 5 shillings each as well: Mary, Hannah, Lydia; all were married by this time.
  • - Caleb, Joseph & Samuel received 5 shillings each.

HUTCHINS, SAMUEL (son of Enoch Hutchins)  came from Kittery to Arundel about 1739, and died before 1750.

He married Hannah.  His widow who was Sarah March died June 9, 1747, and Mr. Whitefield attended her funeral.[SIC: perhaps a transcription error. It was Hannah, widow Hutchins, who died that date and place.]

His sons were: Caleb, Samuel, Simeon, Levi, Joseph and David.

His daughters were: Mary, who married John Merrill; Lydia, John Jellison and John Durrell; and Hannah, married Lemuel Perkins and John Burbank.

There is considerable confusion between the lineage of this Samuel Hutchins and Samuel Hutchins of Haverhill, MA. Both men have a claimed birth date of Aug. 20 1682, and both were supposedly married to a Hannah Merrill, and lived within 50 miles of each other. Both men also have some of the same claimed descendants. However, these appear to be two separate men, with separate sets of siblings. The two Samuels should not be merged.

This Samuel, Son of Enoch Hutchins, II and Mary B. Hutchins (Stevenson), is NOT the one born 20 Aug 1682, as proven by Massachusetts Births and Christenings.

It seems that this Samuel of Maine is also the correct father of Samuel Hutchins, Jr,, 1716-1790, who appears in the 1790 census, Arundel, York, Maine:

  • Name: Saml Hutchins Jr
  • Event Type: Census
  • Event Date: 1790
  • Event Place: Arundel, York, Maine, United States
  • Page: 278

However, there is a 1739 marriage record of a Samuel Hutchins who married Mary Richardson in 1739 in Essex, Mass. So that Samuel, probably the one born 1716, is NOT the son of this Samuel Sr. of Maine.

This Samuel is the same one who is buried at Arundel, York, Maine, as indicated in the memorial below, with the correct parents. However, that memorial has the wrong birth date for this Samuel.

From The American Genealogist, vol. 72, pgs. 173-75

One Samuel Hutchins was born in Haverhill, Essex County, Massachusetts, on 20 August 1682, a son of Joseph and Joanna (Corliss) Hutchins. "Mr Samuel Hutchins of Norwich, formerly of Haverhill in Massachusetts Bay," died at Norwich, New London County, Connecticut, on 15 May 1778, aged 96 years, 9 months and two days, leaving a will dated 23 May 1774 and proved on 2 June 1778, in which he mentions his children Hannah, Samuel, Abigail Fales, and Nathan. No wife is mentioned in the will. The vital records of Haverhill show as children of Samuel Hutchins and Hannah "Marrill": Samuel born on 17 September 1716, Hannah born on 1 May 1717 [sick: 1718?], Nathan born on 1 April 1722, and Abigail born on 1 June 1724. The death of Hannah, wife of Samuel Hutchins, on 9 June 1744 is also recorded.

Meanwhile, about 25 miles northeast of Haverhill, the parish records of the First Church and Society of Kittery, Maine note that in 1714 another Samuel Hutchins was one of the eighteen subscribers to the church's covenant. This Samuel was the son of Enoch Hutchins of Kittery. Enoch had married on 5 April 1664, Mary Stevenson.

Although the year of this Samuel's birth is usually given as about 1685, he must have been born earlier, say about 1677, since he was given a land grant in Kittery in 1699. He and his brother Benjamin were the original administrators of the estate of their brother Enoch Hutchins, Jr., who died in Kittery on 2 April 1706. They were replaced by Enoch's widow on 13 January 1706/7, after her return from captivity in Canada, where she had been taken on 4 May 1705.

The Kittery First Church and Society parish records note on 26 April 1719 the baptism of infants: Sarah Hutchins, Caleb Hutchins, Samuel Hutchins, Hannah Hutchins, and Simeon Hutchins. No parents are named; however, the will cited below makes it clear these are the children of Samuel Hutchins of Kittery. Given the normal two-year interval between single births, this would indicate a marriage date of say 1710.

During the 1720s, this Samuel lived briefly in Essex County, Massachusetts. In 1724, Samuel sold his dwelling in Kittery. On 4 March 1723/4, John Webster, Jr., of Salisbury, Essex County, Massachusetts, weaver, for L363 sold to Mr. Samuel Hutchins of Kittery, yeoman, the farm in Salisbury "I now live on." On 11 May 1727 Samuel Hutchins of Salisbury, yeoman, for L400 sold this land to Mr. Edward Brown of "Reding." The same day Hannah Hutchins surrendered her dower rights, and both acknowledged the deed. By 30 June 1729, Samuel had settled in Arundel, Maine, where Samuel [his X mark] Hutchins, husbandman, of Arundel, York County, wrote his will on 20 October 1742, naming his wife Hannah and nine children. He died before 28 December 1742, the date his will was probated. His widow Hannah died on 9 June 1747. Samuel and Hannah had ten children: the five whose baptisms are given above, and, apparently born after 1719: Mary, Lydia, Joseph, Levi, and David, each named in his will, which also names children Simeon, Caleb, Samuel, and Hannah.

Newbury, Massachusetts vital records note the marriage of Samuel Hutchins to Hannah Merrill, both of Haverhill, on 4 January 1715/16. As we have seen, this marriage has been attributed to both Samuel and Hannah of Haverhill and Samuel and Hannah of Kittery, Salisbury, and Arundel.

When the wills of these two Samuels are compared with the family record of Samuel Hutchins and Hannah "Marrill" preserved in the Haverhill Town Records, it is clear that the Samuel Hutchins who married Hannah Merrill was the son of Joseph and Johannah (Corliss) Hutchins of Haverhill.

Hannah Merrill's family is revealed by Essex County, Massachusetts deeds where it is recorded that on 26 July 1720 Lucy Merrill, widow of John Merrill, late of Haverhill, who had been appointed administrator of his estate on 11 November 1707, deeded to "my son-in-law Samuel Hutchins & my son Nathaniel Merrill," both of Haverhill, 25 acres in Haverhill, bounded west by Joseph Hutchins, "my father[-in-law] Nathaniel Merrill late of Newbury did give to my children.

The identity of Hannah, wife of Samuel Hutchins ([son of] Enoch) of Kittery remains unknown.
