Samuel Jewell, Jr.

SAMUEL JEWELL, Jr. (c. 1716-1765) Samuel Jewell’s name is given with “Jr.” in his will in 1765, and also in the birth record of his eldest child Timothy in Amesbury in 1743. This would seem to prove that Samuel’s father was also named Samuel, presumably Samuel Jewell (b. 1687/8) of Amesbury above. Samuel Jewell married Mary Staples 20 May 1742 at Haverhill, Essex Co., Massachusetts. She was born about 1720, daughter of Samuel and Abigail (Prince) Staples of Haverhill. Several of Samuel’s children were baptized in the Second Congregational Church of Amesbury, now in Merrimac, New Hampshire (per Amesbury vital records). The birthplace of several of his children is given as Newton, Rockingham Co., New Hampshire in the Mormon International Genealogical Index (I.G.I.). The 1765 will of “Samuel Jewell, Jr.” of Newton, Rockingham Co., New Hampshire leaves land to wife Mary and mentions children Timothy, Dorothy Roe, Abigail, Sarah, David, Elizabeth, Mary and John. Children: 1. Timothy, b. 3 May 1743 Amesbury, Mass. Perhaps the Timothy Jewell who married Ruth Wadleigh 12 July 1764 at Hawke, Rockingham Co., N.H. 2. Dorothy, bapt. 3 Jan. 1744/5; m. --- Roe before 1765. 3. John, bapt. 10 May 1747. Perhaps the John Jewell who married Abigail Flanders 19 Oct. 1770 at South Hampton, Rockingham Co., N.H. 4. Abigail, b. 23 Jan. 1748 (per I.G.I.); bapt. 23 Apr. 1749. Perhaps the Abigail Jewell who married Micah Clark 15 Apr. 1779 at Newbury, Essex Co., Mass. 5. Sarah, b. 3 Dec. 1750 (per I.G.I.); bapt. 21 July 1751. Perhaps the Sarah Juell who married Ebenezer Kelly 13 Jan. 1774 at Amesbury, Mass. 6. David, b. 24 May 1753 (per I.G.I.); bapt. 5 Aug. 1753. See below. 7. Elizabeth, b. 24 Jan. 1757 (per I.G.I.); bapt. 6 May 1757. Perhaps the Bette Jewell who married Samuel Morrill 13 Feb. 1784 at Amesbury, Mass. 8. Mary. Perhaps the Mary Jewell who married Daniel Chase 16 Nov. 1781 at Amesbury, Mass.
