About Samuel S King

- On Friday, April 4, 1906, Sam and Lizzie with five of their children, (Phoebe, Jacob, Elizabeth, Abe and Martha) moved from the New Wilmington area in Lawrence County to Mifflin County by rail. Emma and Margaret were already married and remained in Lawrence County. Rufus and Ephraim moved one year later. The family left the railroad station in Lawrence County around noon and arrived at the Lewistown station at approximately 4:30 p.m. From there they commuted to Reedsville by trolley where they were met by Gideon Glick and Abiah Byler. They rode the rest of the way by team and wagon. It was dark by the time they arrived at their new home. The home was situated along Greenwood road and is now (1972) owned by Bishop Jacob Byler. One year later they moved to the John Dan Yoder place which they purchased for $2,200.

The day following moving day, Ephraim brought some household items and cattle by rail. Loaded in the same freight car were one horse, one cow, some furniture and other household items. Some of the furniture is still used by descendents today. It is believed that Ephraim spent the weekend with his family, but then returned to Lawrence County where he worked for a year. The next spring Rufus sold his farm in Lawrence County and with his wife Lizzie, son Samuel, and Ephraim moved to Mifflin County. - In the early 1890's while Sam was splitting logs in the woods, a wedge hit him on the knee. It never healed completely and a few years later gangrene set in. The necessary amputation took place on the kitchen table. One doctor administered the anesthetic, while the other performed the operation. (KgSa p.2-3) - About three years ago, Mr. King had one of his lower limbs amputated and it seems never fully recovered from its effects. During the last few weeks he gradually became weaker until death relieved him.* Reference: [http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=kishvalle...
