SAMUEL KNIGHT. Came to Illinois In 1837 and to Mayfield Township in 1845. The death of Samuel Knight, on Tuesday, which was mentioned in Wednesday's issue of THE TRUE REPUBLICAN, removes another of the pioneers who helped to make out of the wilderness the garden in which we of today enjoy the best blessings of civilization. Samuel Knight was a son of Peter and Anna (Dell) Knight, and was born in Frederick county, Md., June 28, 1816, being one of eight children. He learned the blacksmith's trade of his father. In 1837 he went to Adams county, I11., where he worked at his trade for eight years, and in 1845 came to this county and pre-empted section 9 in Mayfield township, where he resided until about two years ago, since when he had resided most of the time with his son, Charles, in this city. Mr. Knight had held various town offices, was a member of the Christian church and was one of the most highly respected members of the community in which he lived for more than half a century. He was married at Columbus, I11., in 1839, to Miss Mary Tower. She died December 6, 1898. The living children of Mr. and Mrs. Knight are; Mrs. Harriet Webber and Mrs. Mary Vandeburgh, both residents of Kingston; Amanda Campbell, of Mayfield; Laura Low, of Kingston; Charles, of this city, who was at Portland, Ore., at the time of his father's death, and Sarah Snell, who is an inmate of the Elgin hospital. Mr. Knight also leaves surviving three sisters, 22 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. The funeral services will be held this Saturday, May 19, at 2 o'clock p. m., in the Brush Point church and the remains will be interred in Brush Point cemetery.
