Life Story

We write to memorialize the life of Samuel Larcombe, 1941 – 2010.

Sam - a group of your friends, upon whom you have left your indelible mark and who still suffer from the shock of your death, write to inform the world of your departure and to remember who you were. We know that in the course of writing this obituary we may offend you, but it is impossible to fully describe you without venturing into the controversial.

Sam, you were noted by your gruff ebullience. Your were known for your irreverent humor, your endearing, dwarf-like grumpiness, clothed in shorts year-round and topped with a snowy white, nautical, meticulously-groomed beard. When we think of your accomplishments, we think of awe-inspiring stonework, fecund peach trees, and that ability to entrap the sweetest little woman -- the love of your life -- Claudia. How can we forget the frozen ravens in your freezer and your deliberately offensive rants? Your eccentric collections were notorious: pennies, fruit labels, stamps, flat black pebbles, large monolithic stones, hearts, turquoise necklaces, baskets, pottery, silver cups, rugs, quirky friends, squash blossoms, books, northern New Mexico santos, photographs of descansos, Modern Jazz Quartet LPs and tiny notes about everything.

Your aesthetic sensibilities were impeccable and highly refined. We are already picking over the flesh and bones of your collections. Your conversation was always stimulating, if at times an avalanche of non-conformity. Your charm and intelligence engaged and, as often, enraged.

You and Claudia moved from your adobe home of 30+ years off Las Vegas Highway in 2007. You left so much of yourselves behind in that place. You moved into town but when Claudia died, your world was shaken. Less than two years later, you departed too. Your absence at our gatherings is sadly noted but not unexpected! Since Claudia’s death your last-minute excuses not to come to a dinner party were frequent. But now, Sam, your attendance at our parties is guaranteed, whether your like it or not. Your wine glass will always be full and mysteriously empty at night’s end. Your laughter will be audible behind every raunchy joke, and your memorable commentaries still debated.

You always tried to get away with your offenses and intransigence, your implacability, intractability and outright belligerence. You were naughty Sam, but this time you went too far.
