Samuel A. Mackey was sworn into Captain A. C. Bradford's Company E. Lt. Col. James McCown's 1 Battalion, 2 Cavalry, 8 Division, MSG on July 13, 1861 and was left at home on August 13, taking as a substitute, W. B. Walton. (From a company book in the possession of Winston Erwing, Rover Rt., Box 245, West Plains, Missouri). The 1st Battalion was organized June 29, 1861.
