About Samuel McGhee

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/2:2:349W-B1N

Samuel McGee (Rhoda Owen's father) appears to have died by the time his son John F. Owen made his will in St. Louis, MO, December 1831. John F. Owen mentions his mother Martha McGee, and his sister Rhoda Owen, but not his father.

Please note--he has a brother STAFFORD McGee.

....From St. Louis Probate Records 1804-1849: John F. McGEE: 12/26/1831- Recorded 01/16/1832 - names Martha McGee, mother; Stafford McGee, brother; Susannah Armstrong, RHODA OWEN, Rebecca Hanes and Patsey LaFoss, SISTERS; John McGee & John Denny, nephews, Eloise, Julian, Martha & Rhoda Eastan and Matilda Stith, nieces; Ralph Clayton & Benson Calvert, witnesses. B:46-51.

So the Samuel McGee who died in 1834 is yet another Samuel McGee.

This is the third Samuel McGee, the one you mentioned in an earlier message. He was still alive in Woodford Co., KY in August, 1832, so he is most likely not your guy.

Samuel MCGEE , born about 1751, died about Jan 1818 in Grayson Co., KY.

Appears in Grayson Co. Census of 1810 as head of a household of 8 persons. Deeds in Fayette Co. indicate sale of land; Patsey relinquishes dower rights from Hardin County in 1807 before Grayson Co.'s formation in 1810. Also personal property deeded to John and James in Fayette Co. (Harold Morton, Jr.) Probable residence in Grayson County: McGee's Ford on Rough River which divides Grayson and Breckinridge Counties. Married about 1780 in VA, Martha (Patsey) STAFFORD , born about 1751, died after 1832 in MO. Children of Samuel MCGEE and Martha (Patsey) STAFFORD

James MCGEE (156), died about Aug 1815 in Breckinridge Co., KY.

Info. from will filed in Breckinridge Co., KY. James wrote his will on a piece of scrap paper, unwittnessed, leaving all his estate to his wife, Jane. He apparently had no children and the will was contested by Samuel until his death. Soon after the death of James, Jane married Josiah Berryman. Eventually, the will was upheld and she inheirited all his estate.

Married 16 Nov 1812, Jane EIDSON .

Louisa MCGEE .

!Marriage found in Hardin Co. and assumed to be child of Samuel & Patsey since she is not found among the descendents of the other McGehees (5 brothers). STILL SPECULATIVE!

Married 27 Mar 1817 in Hardin Co., KY, Henry DARLING

William MCGEE .

A William McGee appears several times in Breckinridge Co. records and married Elizabeth Moorman there 2 Dec 1829. As a child in this family, THIS IS VERY SPECULATIVE. If he stayed behind, he must have been living with a married sister as he wasn't a H/H in 1820 census.

Rebecca MCGEE , died after 1832.

Named in will of John as a sister: Rebecca Hanes Rebecca might have had a previous marriage as nieces & newphews with surnames of DENNY and EASTAN are also named in the will. Breckinridge Co. marriage records which would have recorded her marriages are lost for this period.

Married HANES

Martha (Patsey) MCGEE , died after 1832.

Named in John McGee's will as a sister, "Patsey Lafoss". Probably the wife of Raue La Force, "...a native of Virginia" according to a sketch on Samuel B.Laforce, a son of Raue La Force and Martha (McGee) LaForce, "...a native of Kentucky". Samuel said to have been "...reared in Pike Co., MO and came to Jasper Co. in 1843". Biosketch on Samuel B. Laforce of Jaspar Co., MO supplied by Ann Ledbetter.

Married Raue LA FORCE , born 1765 in VA.

Susannah MCGEE , born about 1782 in VA or KY, died before Jan 1842 in Probably Breckinridge Co., KY.

Susannah married William Hardin 10 Jul 1808 in Breckinridge Co., KY. She appears there in the 1810 census as follows: Hardin, William: Males - 1 45 & over 1 16 to 26 1 10 to 16 Females - 1 16 to 26 2 under 10 Susannah is 26-45 in Wm. Hardin household of 1820; she is not found in 1830 census, but in 1840 Robert Armstrong's household shows females 30-40 & 60-70. Robert's age shows 40-50. Robert Armstrong household in 1840 Breck. Co. census, Pg. 438: Males: l(5-10), 1 (40-50); Females: 1 (30-40); 1 (60-70) Could wrong block be marked for Susannah?

An article in "Climb your family Tree" quotes 1903 article in Breckinridge Co. newspaper (exact name of paper and date of article unknown) which said both of Hardin's wives are buried with him in Old Ft. Hardin cemetery, now lost.

Breckinridge Co. Court Order Book contains separate motions dated Sept. 16, 1822 by Mrs. Susanna Hardin for Nathan D. Anderson to be appointed guardian of both Lucinda and Hannah Ann, "infant under the age 14 years, orphan of William Hardin, dec'd, whereupon he with Henry Haynes and Mrs. Susanna Hardin entered into bond in the penalty of $2000 conditioned agreeably to law." (Pages 325 & 326).

A deed or other document names another guardian for the girls in about 1827. It is possible that she gave up guardian because of her remarriage. On 19 March 1828 Robert Armstrong and Susannah deeded land on Brushy Fork of Long Lick Creek in Breckinridge Co., KY to Rhodes S. Wilson and wife, Hannah Ann. Information of 2/22/91 from Virginia Hinton, Archivist, Breckinridge Co., KY: "I'm not at liberty to copy any records off the Goshen Church records but I will give you a little information. Susannah Armstrong joined the church by letter in 1823 and was dead by Jan.1842. In 1834 Bro. Armstrong (Robert) was in full membership. "

Married first, 10 Jul 1808 at Hardinsburg, Breckinridge Co., KY, William HARDIN , born 1747 in Fauquier Co., VA, died 22 Jul 1821 in Breckinridge Co., KY,son of John HARDIN and Catherine MARR

Married second, about 1823, Robert ARMSTRONG

John F. MCGEE , born about 1781 in VA or KY, died about Jan 1832 at St. Louis, MO.

!Approximated birth from 1830 census. Death estimated from date will recorded. John was Bondsman for marriages of his sibilings; probably the oldest. Both John & James are possibly the two older boys in Samuel's H/H 1810. After Samuel's death, John disappears from the Grayson Co., KY Tax List and probably removed to Missouri with his mother and the Thomas Stith family as no McGee's appear in 1820 census of Grayson Co., KY. Neither have they been identified in the 1820 Missouri census.

John McGee, H/H appears in the 1830 MO census as follows: 1 Male: 40-50 2 Females: 15-20 1 " 40-50 1 70-80 Probable make-up of this family: 70-80 F his mother, Patsey; the 40-50 F, his sister, Ann Gains McGee Stith; the 2 other F are her daughters. The possibility of a wife for John does not appear in any records yet found.

!From St. Louis Probate Records 1804-1849: John F.
McGEE: 12/26/1831- Recorded 01/16/1832 - names

Martha

Hannah MCGEE , born 26 Feb 1781 in VA, died 14
Aug 1856 in Grayson Co., KY.

!Info from Shirley Pile & Elden Wilson. Hannah's

death

is recorded in Grayson Co., KY Vital Statistics
showing parents as simply "McGees". Although no
document links Hannah specifically as a daughter in
this family, she DOES NOT fit into information of

the

other McGhee families of Kentucky. Her children

carry

down the names of "Samuel McGee" and "Patsey McGee"
and one descendant is named "Stafford McGee

Wilson".

Also, she was a member of Goshen Baptist Church

when

her presumed sisters, Susannah and Rhoda were

members.

It is probably this Hannah for whom Susannah McGee
Hardin named her first daughter, Hannah Ann. Hannah
Ann grew up to marry, and later divorce, Rhodes
Wilson, her first cousin, son of (this) Hannah &

Jesse

Wilson.

Married 30 Sep 1802, Jesse WILSON , born 1 Feb
1782, died 13 Mar 1853 in Grayson Co., KY,
son of Joseph WILSON and Mary PRICE .

Rhoda MCGEE , born 30 Dec 1785 in Fayette Co.,
KY, died 26 Sep 1881 at Pattieville, Ohio Co., KY.

!Information from her obit sent by Harold Morton,

Jr.,

son of Rhoda Ethelwyn Cowin Morton.

Married 4 Jun 1808 in Breckinridge Co., KY, Robert
OWEN , born about 1784, died 25 Feb 1861 in

Ohio

Co., KY.

Ann Gaines MCGEE), born 5 Feb 1788 in Fayette
Co., KY, died 29 Aug 1867 in Chariton Co., MO.

!Married Thomas Stith on 10 Apr 1810 in Hardin Co.,
"with permission of father, Samuel McGee." Birth &
death dates from Walton Bible in posession of Vey
Lovegren via Ann Ledbetter. Thomas Stith seems to

have

moved with his family, John McGee and his mother
Martha and possibly others to St. Louis after the
death of his father, Samuel.

Married first, 10 Apr 1810 in Hardin Co., KY,

Thomas

STITH , born 23 Dec 1788, died 10 Jun 1819 in

MO,

son of Joseph STITH and Nancy COCKE

Married second, 12 Nov 1820 in Pike Co., MO, John
BARNETT

Stafford MCGEE , born about 1795 in KY, died
after 1832.
