About Samuel Midgley

SAMUEL MIDGLEY

On the basis of the 1861 Census record, Samuel was probably born in 1819 in Meanwood, Yorkshire; the son of John and Elizabeth Midgley.

When the UK Census was taken on 6 June 1841, Samuel was living in Meanwood with his mother, two siblings and the son of his sister. He was then aged 20 and employed as an agricultural labourer.

When the UK Census was taken on 30 March 1851, Samuel was living in Chapel Allerton, Yorkshire with his widowed mother (Elizabeth), two younger brothers and two of his sister’s sons. He was then aged 31 and employed as a mason’s labourer.

He was married on Saturday 23 October 1858 in Leeds to Mary Bibby, a widow. He was then aged 39.

When the UK Census was taken on 7 April 1861, Samuel was living in Myrtle Row, Chapel Allerton with Mary and three children from Mary’s first marriage. Samuel was then aged 41 and employed as a masonry labourer. The step-children were George (20 and a farmer), John (17 and a blacksmith) and William (14 and a stone quarrier).

When the UK Census was taken on 2 April 1871, Samuel was living at 6 Myrtle Row, Chapel Allerton with Mary and an adult son from Mary’s first marriage. Samuel was then aged 51 and employed as a mason’s labourer. The stepson was William (24 and a leather finisher).

Samuel was widowed in 1880 when Mary died. They had been married for 21 years but had not had any children.

When the UK Census was taken on 3 April 1881, Samuel was lodging with Joseph Renton and his family at Parkside Road, Myrtle Square in Chapel Allerton. Samuel was then aged 61 and still employed as a stone mason’s labourer. As Joseph Renton was a stone mason, it is likely that Samuel was working for him.

Samuel was still living in Myrtle Square, Chapel Allerton in 1889 when he died, aged 70. He was buried in Row C, No 1 at Meanwood Cemetery on 13 August.
