Samuel was born March 21, 1863, in Wellville, Utah, to Samuel C. Mitton of Halifax, England, and Mary Ann Bentley, also of England, and at the time of his death according to his death certificate, his wife was Mary Hawkins Mitton. He died of anemia after several strokes over a 5 year period. His usual occupation was that of an office manager for a milk company. He was buried in the Logan City Cemetery, in Logan, Cache, Utah. At the time of his death, he had been living at 33 South 1st West in Logan, and had lived there for at least 53 years. Samuel Bailey Mitton had married Mary Jane Hawkins March 28, 1888, in Cache County, Utah.

The following information about Samuel Bailey Mitton was found on Ancestry.com, and the source listed was All Utah Statehood, volumes 1-4: With the development of the creamery and dairy interests of the Cache valley S. B. Mitton has been prominently connected and is a representative of the Borden Condensed Milk Company at Logan. His activities along this line have been of untold value and benefit to the district in which he has labored, producing a market for many dairymen in this part of the state.

Mr. Mitton was born in Wellsville, Utah, March 21, 1863, a son of Samuel and Mary Ann (Bailey) Mitton, who were natives of England, the former born at Halifax, May 27, 1835, while the latter was born at Staley Bridge, September 9, 1830. The mother came to America in 1835 with her mother, a sister and a brother, the father having died in England. They were converts to the faith of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and arrived in Salt Lake, September 25, 1855.

Samuel Mitton made the voyage to the new world in 1853 and his father had preceded him but only lived for a few months after reaching the new world. Samuel Mitton was first employed at Cincinnati, Ohio, and afterward in St. Louis, thus earning money enough to bring his mother and her family of nine children to America. Upon their arrival all went to work and they were soon able to obtain an outfit wherewith to continue their journey to Utah, which they accomplished about 1856.

Samuel Mitton worked for a time at Salt Lake, and about 1859 removed to Wellsville, where he spent his remaining days. He was a carpenter by trade and in addition to building houses and doing other carpenter work engaged in making furniture. He likewise assisted in the construction of canals and other public enterprises contributing to the development of the state. He was married December 25, 1861.

After living for many years at Wellsville he removed to Logan, where he passed away December 27, 1902. He was a member of the Quorum of Seventy and in October, 1880, he went to England on a mission but did not complete his full term there on account of illness. Mr. Mitton was a man of considerable talent. He was a natural musician and actor and in the early days of Wellsville staged some heavy plays, including some of the plays of Shakespeare. He was a moving spirit in the life of the community and was a most valued and highly esteemed citizen.

Utah Since State: Historical and Biographical. Volume IV.

In the 1880 U.S. Census for Wellsville, Cache, Utah, Samuel, 17, was living with his parents, Samuel C., 42, and Mary A., 48, and sister, Mary A., 12. Samuel's father was working as a carpenter and he was working as an apprentice to a carpenter, probably his father. His sister, Mary, was at school. Eight years latter Samuel married Mary Jane Hawkins March 28, 1888, in Logan, Cache, Utah.

In the 1900 U.S. Federal Census for Logan, Cache, Utah, Samuel B. Mitton, 36, and his wife Mary H., 29, were living with their first three children, William, 10, Ada, 6, and Annie, 3. Sam was working as a bookkeeper. By 1920, Sam, 56, and Mary, 48, were living with their children, Annie, 22, Samuel Leroy, 19, Mary, 12, Ruby, 10, and Lorenzo, 6, and Sam was working as an accountant in the milk factory. Annie was working as a bookkeeper in a sugar company and Leroy was working as a laborer at the milk factory.

By 1930, just Ruby, 20, and Lorenzo, 16, were still living at home. The family was living on South 1st West Street in a home they owned valued at $5,000 and they had a radio in their home. Sam was still working as a bookkeeper in the milk factory.

I don't know where the family was living in 1940 because I could find no census record for them, however according to a 1946 U.S. City Directory for Logan Utah, Samuel B. and Mary H. Mitton were living at 33 South 1st West, but no occupation was listed for him. In the 1952 directory for Salt Lake city, they were living at 2942 E. Louise Avenue, but by 1953, they were living at 33 South 1st West again.

A Utah Cemetery Inventory record for Samuel B. Mitton states that he passed away February 25, 1954, and was buried in the Logan City Cemetery on March 1, 1954. He was the son of Mary Ann Bailey and Samuel C. Mitton.
