Headline: Samuel T. Moffitt Expires Suddenly Headline: Prominent Merchant of Twelfth Ward is Stricken Yesterday Afternoon and Death Follows This Morning Samuel T. Moffitt, one of the leading citizens of the Twelfth ward and who for a number of years conducted a store at Broad avenue and Thirtieth Street, died at his home, 2824 West Chestnut avenue, this morning at 9 o'clock. Death was due to a cerebral hemorrhage. He was stricken yesterday afternoon about 2 o'clock and did not regain consciousness. Mr. Moffitt was born at Mooresville, Huntingdon county, Dec. 31, 1860, being the son of Jackson and Catherine Moffitt. He was united in marriage with Clara Lindsay thirty-six years ago. Sixteen years ago the couple came to Altoona, moving here from Arch Spring. For the past fifteen years he conducted the store on Broad avenue. He was a member of the Broad Avenue Presbyterian church. He was a public spirited citizen and during the past year or two took an active part in war work in which the Twelfth ward was concerned. His widow and three sons survive. They are: Herbert R., an assistant engineer in the state highway department located at DuBois; Earl L. of State College, connected with the bureau of farm extension of the college, and Dr. H. Fred, a first lieutenant in the United States medical service who is still in France. These brothers and sisters also survive: Harry B. Moffitt of Altoona, Calvin and Charles L. of Bellwood, Miss Mary W. Moffitt and Mrs. Joseph Gilliland of Petersburg.
