About Samuel Mordecai

Samuel was a merchant in Petersburg and Richmond, VA, and author of a book about the early history of Richmond, entitled "Richmond in By-Gone Days." He was a teacher in the successful Mordecai Female Academy run by his father Jacob in Warrenton, NC. He served in the War of 1812 as a Corporal in Company 1 of the Corps d'Elite (Randolph's), Virginia Military. In later years, he was charged with the handling of the family's investments but apparently few of his schemes proved successful. While his funeral was being conducted and before the grave had been filled in, word was received that the Northern soldiers (Civil War) were entering Raleigh. The grave was hastily leveled and obscured as nearly as possible to prevent it being molested by the soldiers in search of silver, etc.
