Angel notes: Someone should be able to verify that he was a casualty in the Battle of Stoney Creek, since there were so few American casualties in that battle (it was decided mostly by the capture of the American leadership). Someone with access to the book "Strange Fatality: The Battle of Stoney Creek, 1813" by James E. Elliott could verify.
According to the book, his commanding officer would have been in this battle Capt. Drake Peter Mills, age 35, commissioned at Albany, New York, 14 months before the battle. Samuel was born in 1769. He is the son of Joel Clemons and Sarah Pettibone. The name is also found spelled Clemens and Clemmons. His death was reported in the Bridgeport Republican Standard of 5 Aug 1851 [Hale, Collection of Newspaper Records and Cemetery Inscriptions, 61:303][1]
Samuel's birth was reported as 31 May 1769 in Connecticut Town Birth Records, pre-1870 (Barbour Collection)[2]
A FamilySearch turns up a Samuel Pettibone Clemens b 31 May 1769 in Litchfield, Ct., who died 1 Jun 1813 at Fort George, Ontario, Canada, who married abt 1790 and had two children, Sally Clemens and Augustus S.
