About Samuel Houston Reid, Jr.

Sam was the second child born to Sam H. and Josie Bond Reid of Woodville. He lived in Woodville until he left to pursue his education at Baylor University and later the University of Pennsylvania. Trained to be a banker, Sam quickly found this activity too confining and turned to the lumber industry. While in West Texas as a representative for the Angelina County Lumber Co., he met Grace Ferguson of Hereford. They married there on 30 Jun 1930.

Sam and Grace moved back to Woodville sometime after World War II. In 1950 he helped to build Tyler county's first electric lumber mill, the Hillister Lumber and Manufacturing Co. He also was a partner in the Woodville Lumber Co. Sam was civic minded, always looking for ways to improve the local economy. He was active in the East Texas Chamber of Commerce for many years, and was president of the Texas Forestry Association in 1953.

Sam's beloved wife Grace died in 1961. He later married Mrs. Reba Murphy of Nacogdoches. Sam and Reba spent a few years in Woodville before retiring to her home in Nacogdoches.
