Later in life, he purchased 20 acres in Sharon, Vermont where another Samuel Shepard (distant cousin). Later, he moved again to the Hanover Settlement in Chili, New York where 28 people lived in one cabin.

He then moved to Riga, New York where he was one of the earliest pioneers.
