About Samuel Sherman
He met his wife while quartered with troops at her father's house during the American Revolution. They lived first at Providence, Rhode Island, then moved to Cambridge, New York, and finally settled in Norway, New York in 1793.
Before coming to Norway, Samuel Sherman looked in the vicinity of Utica, New York (in neighboring Oneida County), which then consisted of a few log houses, but declined to buy for fear of the fever and ague. (Norway History). Lutz suggests that Samuel might have lived [near Palmyra] in Wayne County, New York before removing to Herkimer County, as Samuel's son Humphrey lived there later.
Samuel bought 100 acres of "the farm now occupied by David Smith" [in Herkimer County] paying $3 per acre. He built the farm house "now occupied by David Smith" in 1814, having previously lived in a log house. He purchased an additional 100 acres on the east of the original farm. The family engaged in cheese dairying. In 1835 his surviving sons sold to Benjamin Hurd and removed to Allegany County, New York.
Samuel was one of three assessors for the tax of 1810 in Herkimer County. He was taxed, along with Umphrey (his son Humphrey), Moses (perhaps his cousin), and Wright (his son). His real estate was valued at $800, but the acreage was not stated.
