In the 1900 census, Samuel and his family were living in Loudon Twp., Carroll Co., Ohio. He was listed as age 44 born April 1856 in Ohio, his wife Mary E. age 41 born October 1858 in Ohio, their children listed were; Maggie D. age 19 born December 1880, Jesse L. (male) age 17 born February 1883, Abbie L. age 15 born October 1884, Merl (Thomas Merl) age 13 born October 1886, Loyd R. age 11 born January 1889, Virgil P. age 8 born April 1892, Isaac age 5 born August 1894 and Harold age 2 months born March 1900, all were born in Ohio. It stated Sam & Mary were married for 24 years, and had 11 children but only 8 were still living at that time.

BERGHOLZ COUPLE CELEBRATE GOLDEN WEDDING RECENTLY

Surrounded by their children and grandchildren, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Slates of Bergholz recently celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in a very pleasant affair conducted in their home Sunday, January 9. The house and table were attractively decorated in the color scheme of gold and white with bridal centerpiece and favors completing the appointments for the table. It was a day upon which Mr. and Mrs. Slates, as well as others present, can look back with pleasure, they stated. Following a chicken dinner served at noon, an informal afternoon was spent with talks given by Rev. Cummings and Rev. Ault. The couple were presented with a purse of gold, and in addition Mrs. Slate received a gold brooch and Mr. Slates a gold watch charm. Their eight children with their families, were present. They were Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Slates, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Slates, Mr. and Mrs. T. M. Slates and Mrs. Osa Davis, of Bergholz; Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Hawk of Carrollton, Miss Maggie Slates of Akron, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Slates and Mr. and Mrs. V. P. Slates of Minerva. Thirteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren were present. Rev. and Mrs. Cummings, Rev. and Mrs. Ault and Mrs. Elizabeth Miller were also guests.

His obituary in the Carroll Journal, Carrollton, Ohio Thurs., February 3, 1944.

Samuel Slates, 87, died Monday, January 31, in the home of a daughter, Mrs. J. M. Slates at Bergholz. A native of Carroll County, Mr. Slates was born near Kilgore on April 21, 1856, and had resided in Bergholz for 42 years. Surviving are three other daughters, Mrs. Howard Hawk of Carrollton, Mrs. Osa Davis and Mrs. Margaret Slates of Akron; four sons, Jesse L. Slates of Bergholz, Lloyd and Virgil Slates of Minerva and Merrill Slates of Canton; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Services were held yesterday in Bergholz Methodist Church with Rev. R. A. Marty officiating. Burial was made in Bergholz Cemetery.".
