About Samuel Soper
- Samuel Soper was born on the 23rd of March 1846, in Penton, Hampshire to James and Mary Soper. The first census Samuel appeared in was the 1851 census, which was recorded on the 31st of March 1851. Samuel, who had just turned 5 years old, was living on a farm in the village of Penton Mewsey, with his parents and 3 siblings. Samuel and his 2 older siblings were schoolchildren, and their father was an Agricultural Labourer.
- By the 1861 census, Samuel was 14 years old. He was still attending school, while his father and older brother worked as Shepherds.
- On the 20th of October 1866, Samuel married Sarah Ann Piper.
- By 1881, over 20 years since his last appearance in the census, Samuel, now 35, was living at 106 Fort Road in London with his wife and 4 children. He worked as a "Tanner's Labourer." In 1884, Samuel stopped working as a Labourer, and instead found a career in the Railway industry. For the next 4 decades, Samuel worked for "London, Brighton and South Coast" as a "Railway Porter".
- By 1891, Samuel and Sarah had a few more children.
- 10 years later, Samuel, now in his mid 50s, still worked as a Railway Porter, living with his 52 year old wife and 2 youngest children. Unfortunately, Samuel's wife died at the age of 56 in 1905. Samuel remarried to a woman named Sarah Warner on the 1st of September 1906. She was 13 years younger than him.
- By 1911, Samuel was in his mid-60s. He now worked as a "railway warehouseman." He lived at 32 Surrey Square in the village of Walworth, with his second wife, 2 sons and 3 members of his wife's extended family. He voted for Labour in the 1922 election. Samuel died on the 18th of May 1932, at the age of 86. At the time of his death, he had several great-grandchildren. His wife died 6 years later, at the age of 79.
