About Samuel Thompson

Samuel was the son of William and Katherine (Treat) Thompson who left Mystic, Connecticut, in 1663/4 to be priest at Lawnes Creek and Southwark Parishes in Surry County. New England had a surplus of clergy; Virginia had few.

Died without issue.

Surry County, VA, records [Book II, p 323) have reference dated 7 November 1682. Estate of Wm. Marriott, deceased, Dr. to Jno. Moring, Admr. of Mr. Geo Proctor, Est.

Amt. due Mr. Samuel Thompson as marrying ye surviving of ye two orphans, out of which 1500 is to be paid and deducted from funeral charges of the dec'd orphan by order of Court. Received of Mr. Thompson in right of his wife 9ber(november) 1681, ex. and settled Maj. Marriott's estate. Samuel Thompson's wife was probably Mary Marriott since he makes reference to her in his will dated 20 Sept 1720 and probated 17 May 1721. 3 July 1783 Surry County records, p 331, "Indenture between Sam Thompson who married Mary, only daughter of Maj William Marriott, deceased, and Thomas Mathas of the other part, land adjoining Nicholas Sessums, 150 acres at Sessums Swamp, etc. Witnesses: Thos. Flood, Wm Thompson.



Samuel Thompson, died in Surry in 1720-1726, names nephew Sam uel, brother William, cousin Wm. Moseley, cousin Robert Payne; "to cousin Samuel my great Bible, and one of my common prayer books and 7 of my Divinity books, besides what is before given" wife Mary. He was son of Rev. William Thompson, minister of Lawne's Creek church in Surry, who, in 1673, was reported to the Court "as an orthodox, faithful, and painful minister, of a quiet, sober, and exemplary life, and then in the I4th year of his ministry in the parish." Mr. Robert Parke, "lately arrived and residing at the house of Mr. Randolph Holt on Hog Island," did on July 18, 1673, enter into Lawne's Creek church and with- out permission preach to a congregation there assembled. Rev. William Thompson had besides Samuel a son William. His wife was Martha, and in 1690 he was a minister in Westmoreland Co. He died in 1732, leaving children Samuel, John, Katherine, Hannah, and gr. children Samuel and Mary.
