1978 - My grandfather, William Ervin Turner, Sr., and I (William Erv in Turner III "Rick") visited "uncle Bunion" a couple of years before befo re my grandfather died. Bunion took us in his home. He had one light bu lb and no telephone. His yard was overgrown with planks laid down to fo rm a path to keep the grass down. My grandmother said he was bitt en by a snake in his front yard one time.
Samuel Bunion Turner (Uncle Bunion) never married. He lived for yea rs in a two room shack across from the Turner home place, where he and h is siblings were born, which he owned and rented for income. He also inhe rited approximate 100 acres of family land and sold pulp wood off of the l and. Bunion was my grandfather's uncle. They were about the same age and play ed together in their youth. Bunion told us he had the phone taken out when the phone company made a mi stake on his bill and overcharged him. He also said he never changed h is watch or clock to Daylight Savings Time. He said he got up when it w as light and went to bed when it got dark. Sundays were the only da ys he and any specific time to be anywhere - he regularly attended Cross P lains Baptist Church near his home. Bunion told me where his parents and grandparents were buried. I asked Bu nion where the Turners came from. He said he remembered his family talki ng about coming to SC from Virginia. Bunion also said he remembered his f amily talking about some of their ancestors coming to America on the "Mayf lower Ship".
