Samuel J. Walsh (born Saul Jerome Wolofsky)
WALSH, Samuel J.
Passed away on March 18, 2008, at the age ofninety-one. He was born on August 31, 1916, the youngest son of Hirsch Wolofsky, publisher of the Montreal Yiddish newspaper "The Canadian Eagle", and Sarah Bercovich. Upon enrolling as a biology student at McGill University, he joined the Young Communist League and changed his name to Walsh on his father's request. After obtaining his B.Sc., he worked full time for the Communist Party of Canada. In 1962 he became the leader of the Communist Party of Quebec, a position he held until a stroke robbed him of his mental faculties in 1990. He is survived by his younger sister Miriam Cooperberg, his son Timothy, his daughter-in- law Victoria, his grandsons Martin and Anthony,and numerous family members and friends. Memorial services will be held in the Chapelle Outremont of the Mount Royal Funeral Complex, 1297 Chemin de la Foret, Outremont, Quebec, on Sunday, April 13, 2008 at 2 p.m.
