About Samuel Stockton White, III.
• attended Germantown Academy • attended Princeton (Class of 1900) where he excelled in gymnastics • 1898 : volunteered for the war with Spain; 1st regiment Chickamanga; discharged having suffered heath issues • later: in College Cambridge, England • 1899: Won the Sandow Medal (for perfect body proportions, UK award) • twice attempted to swim the Dardenelles. His relative Dr. William White of the University of Pennsylvania accompanied him. (weather was difficult ; attempts ended in failure) • 1901: posed for Rodin in Paris ( The Athlete ) ( reported body stats: 1.75m , 77-81 kg. • later posed for the sculptor Bugatti • married the artist Vera McEntire in Los Angeles (1915) • the couple collected a large and significant art collection, most of which was donated to the Philadelphia Museum of Art where each served on the Board of Directors

Vera survived Samuel by 14 years
• The White family is noted for being art collectors, and donated numerous works to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. William was associated with (and photographed by) Man Ray. He also was known to Marcel Duchamp aka Rrose Sélavy (see http://www.philamuseum.org/collections/permanent/56973.html )
Bugatti’s sculpture of Samuel White, Colosse Nu Assis modelled in 1907, can be seen in Père-Lachaise Cemetery, Paris and Jardin d’Arsenal in Gravelines, France. There is some continuity of place: the S.S.White III statue remains on exhibit in the city where his grandfather died in 1879.
