Samuel Locke Wilder

Samuel Locke Wilder Birth: Mar. 14, 1778 Lancaster Worcester County Massachusetts, USA Death: Apr. 7, 1863 Rindge Cheshire County New Hampshire, USA Samuel L. Wilder Esq. was born in Lancaster, MA, the son of Capt. Ephraim and Lucretia (Locke) Wilder. He came to Rindge when he was sixteen years old, where he lived as a farmer and a merchant, through his long life. He was still actively engaged in farming and other activities into his late 70s. Samuel married, Anna Sherwin, the daughter of Jonathan and Mary (Crombie) Sherwin of Rindge, NH. Samuel and Mary resided in Rindge, they had nine children. Samuel was an influential citizen and was active in municipal and state affairs. He was a Justice of the Peace from 1816 until his death, he was Town Clerk from 1808 to 1823, state representative, 1815-1823, 28, 29, 38 and 39. He was a delegate to the Walpole Convention that elected Daniel Webster to represent New Hampshire in the Hartford Convention.

The History of the Town of Rindge, NH also lists his birthdate as 1778, which is also confirmed in the Memorial Address on Marshall Pinckney Wilder. The birth year of 1778 does not match the year of 1776 that was is listed on page 304 in Wilder, Rev. Moses H. (1878). Book of the Wilders. A Contribution to the History of the Wilders. Printed by Edward O. Jenkins, Brooklyn, NY. It is my (Barbara Hawkins) conclusion that the date in the Book of Wilders by Moses Wilder is incorrect.
