Sandile Hadebe (1977 – 2013)

Brief overview:

Sandile (36), was shot in the back and killed, by two unknown men, outside his home in Prince Alfred Street, Pietermaritzburg, on Wednesday 27th November at around 20h00. He was found on the ground next to his house.

"It is believed that Hadebe was returning home from work in his red Opel Corsa and upon opening his gate he was confronted by two unknown men, one armed with a firearm. It is further believed that the suspects demanded the keys to his vehicle however an altercation ensued and it is believed that the victim may have thrown his keys one side. The armed suspect then shot the victim in the back, fatally wounding him."

  • A short while later at about 20:30, police received another report of a shooting along Watt Lane. On arrival Police found an injured male victim lying on the side of the road. He was subsequently identified as Bongani Mthethwa (37). He had sustained a gunshot wound to his abdomen and was immediately transported via ambulance to a hospital outside the city. It is believed that Mthethwa and a friend were sitting in his vehicle, a silver Volkswagen Golf, along Watt lane when they were also confronted by two unknown men, one armed with a firearm. It is alleged the suspects forced them out of his vehicle and demanded car keys. It is further alleged that both victims got out of the vehicle and after handing over the keys he ran off, however the armed suspect fired a shot, hitting him in the abdomen. They then got into the vehicle and fled.
  • A short while later the suspects were spotted in the Northdale area. Upon noticing the police they abandoned the vehicle and fled into nearby bushes. Mthethwa is believed to be in a stable condition in hospital. Police believe that the two incidents may be linked. The arrested suspects, both aged at 21 years of age, will make a court appearance in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's Court shortly on charges of murder, attempted murder, hijacking and attempted hijacking. Investigations continue.

  • 29/11/2013 09h00: "Members of the SAPS Pietermaritzburg Tacking Team acted on information received, proceeded to a shop in Pietermaritz Street, where they made a breakthrough and arrested a 21-year-old male suspect in connection with a shooting and robbery incident in the city on Wednesday evening. At about 13:30 today, members proceeded to the St. Chads area in Ladysmith where they arrested another 21-year-old male suspect."
