About Sara Block

Sara was an unmarried mother of several children born in her home town in Osek to a well documented Wedeles family group. The father was recognized as Daniel Block(h). The family members traveled to the United States and became residents of St. Louis Missouri in 1848. Sara and her daughter and younger sons traveled on the ship Louisiana that arrived in New Orleans in 1848. Daniel and the older son traveled separately.

Sara's birth is recorded in the badatelna Czech Registers in Osek. Her father is clearly Naphalie Wedeles whos father was Solaman Wedeles. Her mothers name is less clear as is her parents names. One grandfather is Michel Gzalr(??). Rebecca is listed but her last name is not clear.

Julius Mueller sent the following information: Sara was born in Osek on June 12, 1795. Her parents were Naphaly and Rebeka nee Wedeles. Naphaly, the familiant, was the son of Salomon Herz and Anna Wedeles. Rebeka Wedeles was the daughter of Benjamin and Rosina nee Wedeles.

Further research from Michael Rosenthal of Overland Park Kansas in 2005 developed from files in Prague indicates that Sara had numerous brothers and sisters. Her slightly younger brother Moses, born 1794, is the great great great grandfather of Michael.

Her siblings were Moses, Sara, Jochim, Rosa, Marcus, Bernard, Anna and Solomon. The last was born in Radnice.

The book "The Kafka Relatives" by Anthony Northey published by Yale University Press contains some connection comments about Wossek i.e. Ossek or Osek. Several photographs also. No direct connection with Wedeles is mentioned in this book.

Current thinking on the marriages of people during the era of the familiant laws suggests that many people were living together, had illegal concubines, were given rites by Rabbi, and were "attic marriages" even though actual civil marriage was illegal.
