About Sara Whale
Two women were confused in earlier genealogies:
1) Sara (Unknown) who married first to Thomas Cakebread and second Philemon Whale. Her parents are unknown. They had one known daughter Mary Cakebread. Mary Cakebread married John Grout, Sr as his first wife. Some authors have proposed a second daughter Anne but others like Anderson in the Great Migration reject Anne.
2) Sarah (Busby) Grout who was the daughter of Nichols Busby and Bridget and the second wife of John Grout (sr).
I’ve updated the biography for Philemon Whale to reflect the most recent peer reviewed research and it includes sources and a discussion of these two women:
Thomas Cakebread married by about 1620 Sarah _____ (assuming she was mother of his child). They had one child: Mary (Cakebread) Grout. The evidence for the daughter Mary who married John Grout is given by Mary Walton Ferris in Dawes-Gates (see reference below), who cites a petition in which John Grout refers to Thomas Cakebread as his father-in-law. (Savage had these marriages completely wrong, as did many other writers.) She married (2) Sudbury 7 November 1649 as his second wife Philemon Whale; she died at Sudbury 28 December 1656. John Grout married second to Sarah Busby (who is not the same Sarah).

- I highly recommend reading the four chapters in Dawes-Gates relating to Philemon Whale (Whale, Upson, Rice, Moore) especially Whale. Dawes-Gates is available in the Ancestry.com card catalog and also on HathiTrust. It is the best sourced and best researched work on these families including major error corrections. Later articles from TAG, TG and NEHGR have updated a few things since Dawes-Gates but the fundamentals are sound. See especially: Mary Walton Ferris, Dawes-Gates Vol 1 p 663: Addendum to WHALE
