About Sarah Ball
Sarah Dorsey, daughter of Nicholas Dorsey and Elizabeth Worthington, made a romantic match. According to tradition she was engaged to marry a Worthington, a very wealthy gentleman, but she fell in love with William Ball, of Annapolis, while on a visit to that ancient burgh. William Ball, provided with a coach-and-four, drove to Elkridge one winter's night. He went to Nicholas Dorsey's home, according to agreement with his fair inamorata, and carried her off like a knight errant. Sarah climbed down a ladder from her bed-chamber and entered the coach provided by her lover. In her hasty flight she left one of her high-heeled slipeers sticking in the snow bank. This first led to the discovery of the elopement. Nicholas Dorsey, the father, pursued the lovers, but when he caught up with them the next morning he found they had been quietly married. Like a sensible XVIIIth century gentleman he fore___ them. William Ball and his wife moved to Baltimore, where they resided until they died. He held the office of Sheriff of Baltimore for some years.
