About Sarah Ann Browning

Sarah was born 14 September 1814 at Clerkenwell, Middlesex. She was the daughter of Robert Browning and Jane Smith. [1][2]

Sarah never married. She lived with her parents, and then after their deaths, she lived with her sister, Louisa.[3] After her sister's death in 1889, Sarah may have lived with her niece, Jane Smith, the wife of Davies Smith, as Jane Smith was the executor of Sarah's last will and testament.[4]

Sarah died 8 November 1902 at Middlesex, England, at the age of 88.[5]

"Sarah Browning of 42 Maitland Park Road Haverstock Hill Middlesex, spinster, died 8 November 1902. Administration (with Will) London 9 January to [her niece] Jane Davies Smith (wife of George William Frederick Davies Smith). Effects: 654 pounds seven shillings."[6]

Caution: Some family trees posit that Sarah was the wife of a Mr. William Thomas Hore and had many children by him. This is not correct. The Papers of The Browning Society make it clear that Sarah was a spinster who lived with her sister Louisa until Louisa's death in 1889. The probate papers for Sarah name her niece Jane Smith, wife of Davies Smith, as her executor. It would have been impossible for this Sarah to have been the Sarah who married Mr. Hore.
