CAHILL, Sarah (du Pont) "Sally" Age 80, died peacefully Sunday, January 24, 2010 after a lengthy illness, surrounded by her loving family, at RiverMead, in Peterborough, NH.

Born in 1929 and raised in Wilmington, Delaware, she was the daughter of Emile F. du Pont and Sarah Dure Townsend du Pont. Sally attended the Tower Hill School in Wilmington followed by Miss Porter's School in Farmington, CT, where she was affectionately known as "Dupie" and served as President of the School her senior year in 1947. She graduated from Bennett Junior College in Millbrook, NY. Sally lived a life of service and leadership. She was most involved with her beloved alma mater, Miss Porter's School, where she received the school's highest honor for distinguished service. She was a Trustee from 1993 to 1999, and for decades, up until recently, served on various alumnae, class and development committees.

She was part of a strong family tradition, her mother, aunt, daughter and granddaughter all having attended Miss Porter's. Other roles of leadership and service included Deacon, Member of the Finance Committee and Sunday School Teacher at the Wellesley Congregational Church, Wellesley, MA; Hospice Worker for over a decade at Norwood Hospital in Norwood, MA; Trustee, Member of the Corporation and Chair of Planned Giving at the Joslin Diabetes Foundation; Trustee of the Stoddard Congregational Church; Secretary of the Stoddard Historical Society; and numerous volunteer positions in area hospitals, schools and in her local community.

Sally was a devoted wife and mother. She met her husband of 60 years, Dr. George F. Cahill, Jr., during college week in Bermuda in 1947, and they married two years later. She was very supportive of her husband who has had a distinguished medical research and teaching career. She accompanied him around the world as he shared his medical expertise, and he credits his professional success to her unwavering support, grace, and ease in any situation.

They lived in New York City in the early 1950s, followed by Wellesley and Needham, MA, raising six children, four girls and two boys.

Love of nature and the outdoors brought them to Stoddard, New Hampshire in the 1980's where they built a home on property they had owned since the mid-1960's and had used as a weekend and vacation retreat. Sally had a deep love and commitment to the natural world and to all living creatures. She created an extensive catalogue of wildflower photographs, accompanied by her observations and research, which was recently printed. Sally believed in the power of prayer. Her faith and compassion enabled her to make the most of any situation and acknowledge the divinity and grace in everyone.

In addition to her husband George, of Stoddard and Peterborough, NH, Sally is survived by her children, Colly Remley, Green Bay, WI, Peter Cahill, Los Gatos, CA, George (Chip) Cahill, Bellevue, WA, Rhett Cahill, Acton, MA, Eva Cahill, Calais, VT, Beth Tiedemann, NYC, their spouses and 15 grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers, Francis I. du Pont, Chadds Ford, PA and Peter R. du Pont and wife Jeannie, NYC.

A memorial service is being held on February 1st at 1:00PM at the Union Congregational Church, 33 Concord Rd. Peterborough, NH.

An interment service will take place later this spring at the Stoddard Congregational Church.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Sally's memory to Home Health Care Hospice and Community Service, PO Box 496, Peterborough, NH 03458 or Miss Porter's School, Alumnae Office, 60 Main Street, Farmington, CT 06032.
