About Sarah Crowder
Biography
In the 1841 & 1851 censuses Sarah Pritchard lived with her oldest sister, Mary Ann and her family at Meeting House (or Chapel) Lane, Ringwood, Hampshire; the Brown family house named 'The Furlong'. The house overlooked open land -the Furlong, a feature of the town. Brown and Pritchard families and two family names were intertwined in subsequent generations. °
Sarah was born in 1819 in or near Kings Langley, Hertfordshire, the daughter of John Pritchard & Harriett Pritchard. John Pritchard was an exciseman, who by then had been in Crown Service since before their second eldest daughter, Harriet, had been born in Lancashire. Sarah Pritchard married Thomas Crowder in Christchurch, Hampshire, where Sarah's father, John had by the Census in 1851, retired as an Officer in the Excise Service and with her mother, Harriett continued to live until they died. By 1861 -almost soon after their marriage on the south coast in Hampshire, the Crowder family moved to live at the Wharfage Madeley, Trowbridge, Shropshire, a house and premises -storage buildings and yard for the decorating, plumbing and glazier's business which Thomas Crowder ran overlooking the River Severn, next to the Talbot Inn and the Iron-bridge. Her father -John Pritchard, was born in Broseley, on the far side of the River from Madeley; in 1789 and, then 1813. married Sarah's mother Harriett at Madeley Parish Church. The Census of 1861 lists Thomas Crowder, aged 34 as the head of his family in Madeley and as a Painter, Plumber, Glazier, Spirit and Porter Dealer employing eleven [men] and 2 boys. Thomas himself was born at Ironbridge. Sarah's birth place was Hertfordshire -she was born at or near Kings Langley where her father had been a time based as an Excise Officer. They had one son, John Stanley Crowder aged two. Sarah had two brothers, John Gilbert Pritchard, who was disabled and cared for by John and Harriett at home and George Pritchard a successful Bank Manager whose career lasting forty years, was spent with the London & County Bank in London until his retirement in 1892 when he retired to Poole. She had two older sisters, Mary Ann and Harriet Farnell and one younger, Emma who married Peter O'Connor and lived in Westminster, London. ° The Profile for Sarah's sister, Harriet Farnell provides more information. °
